Learning Opportunities for Students

Red Wing Ignite works with students of all ages.  We are interested in getting youth involved in technology,  STEM career pathways and our community.  We have programs for kids who know they love technology and a few opportunities for kids who just want to test it out.  Currently, we have the following programs available for youth - but we come up with new ideas all of the time.  Check back often or feel free to contact us with a good idea!

Some of the programs are:  WingerDojo, Tech Entrepreneur Program, College Tech Internship.

STEAM Team

Red Wing Ignite partners with local educational and nonprofit leaders to promote and support STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) in the schools. We meet regularly to talk about how to make STEAM happen whether that means hearing from educators, talking to experts in the region or finding resources.

WingerDojo

Red Wing Ignite has brought the international program, CoderDojo to Red Wing.  WingerDojo is an open source, free computer programming club for youth ages 7 to 17. Students work with adult mentors to learn various coding languages, robotics and other technology. The topics change each time based on the volunteer mentor.  There are resources available online and in the room. As they learn, participants earn badges that demonstrate skills and proficiencies.

It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn cool things, hang out with other kids and work alone and in teams. Learn more about Winger Dojo. Or join the WingerDojo on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5:00 - 6:30 PM.

Tech Entrepreneur Program

Red Wing High School students pitch their startup idea to investors as a part of the Tech Entrepreneur Program in Red Wing, MN

In the Tech Entrepreneur Program, high school students learn to build and market their own mobile app. It’s a program that meets a couple times per week. Students learn how to code, develop, market and pitch an app to investors. The program is free but requires a time commitment from participants. It won’t always be easy, but it is rewarding. Teens collaborate on projects, giving them a chance to try out all sides of the product development process. It’s a great way to find your strengths and maybe your calling. Classes are offered through Red Wing Community Education.

Summer Tech Internship

Red Wing Ignite started an internship program in 2015. Three interns were hired to work with three local companies. It was a win-win-win project. One student designed an app that his adopted company is going to help him bring to market. One intern remained on staff for the school year. If you are in college or graduate school, are interest in technology (programming, database development, analyst and other areas of interest) and want to live in Red Wing for the summer – we may have an opportunity for you.

The internship will be a good opportunity to work in at least 2-3 different businesses or organizations in our community.  You will be working to help solve challenges or problems at the various worksites in the Red Wing area.  Interns will gain hands on and practical experience. We want to make sure interns have a great learning environment. Interns will need to be able to work independently, be self-starters, have strong interpersonal communication skills, be creative problem solvers and team players.

Details

The internship will start June 1 and go through mid August. Worksites will be selected based on the best learning opportunities provided to students. We are seeking students that have  completed their 2nd year in college, have computer science and communication skills, work independently and are self-starters.
