Got an Idea for a Red Hot Hack Project?

We’re getting closer and people are getting excited for the Red Hot Hack. If you have an idea you want to pitch for the event – let us know. You are welcome to pitch your idea as a comment or check out the Red Hot Hack Event Page and post your idea there. Saturday morning at the Red Hot Hack all attendees will be invited to pitch their ideas – but previewing them in advance might help attract support and/or initiate conversation that hones the idea and makes it even better before the event even starts.

We encourage you to pitch early and often!

We suspect that not all ideas pitched will become projects at the event. Attendees are welcome to select the projects that most interest them so some good ideas get shelved for later. That being said, we’re also happy to support a team of one. So even if it becomes a solo journey, we invite you to join us!

Red Hot Hack is interested in business ideas too

RHHlogo-300pxWe love the idea of coding for good and civic coding. We encourage and embrace civic coders and innovators! We invite you to join us with your best business and entrepreneurial ideas too. Our goals are to spur innovation in all sectors. And we’re going to have some notable business leaders, entrepreneurs and funders around to see what’s bubbling up. Our Goals for the Weekend

Inspire applications focused on education, public safety, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, energy and transportation. Draw from your passion to create a better way.

  • Create projects and applications that make use of our Gigabit broadband!
  • Respect progress at any stage. We understand that projects have a start, middle and end and that doesn’t always fit into a weekend. So please come with your freshly conceived ideas, your lifelong pursuit or your nearly finished project. Or come prepared to jump into a joint project.
  • Value all skills. Can’t code? That’s OK we need people who can write and organize and have experience knowing what works and what doesn’t.
  • Have fun and build relationships inside, outside and around Red Wing.

First Hack event? Wondering if it’s for you? It is!

RHHlogo-300pxThe short answer? If you have a desire to use technology to innovate – this if for you! The longer answers, depending on scenario…

I have an idea – Bring your ideas to the Red Hot Hack. It’s a great opportunity to work with colleagues (new or established) on an idea at any stage of development. Your new team can help you flesh out an approach or even help you decide if it’s an idea worth pursuing.

I have a team – Bring ‘em to the Red Hot Hack. Maybe you have an idea. Maybe you have a project your been working on for a while. Maybe you’re looking for new ideas. We can provide the space, the technology, the quiet. We can even provide some outside support in the form of event mentors and colleagues from other teams.

I have skills and/or time - Bring ‘em to the Red Hot Hack. Recognize that hack events aren’t just for coders and geeks. If you can write, organize, present, manage a project or even cheer people on, your skills will find a place. We’ll have people who are glad to put your to work for the weekend. (Heck maybe you’ll make a connection that will lead to a job beyond Sunday!)

Saturday morning attendees will get an opportunity to pitch their ideas and attendees will get an opportunity to choose the ideas they want to pursue. So there’s room for everyone at the tables!

After Broadband, Then What? The Real Work Begins

broadband

By Howard Baldwin, Contributing Columnist I find myself writing more often about the challenges of getting broadband installed – financing it, building consensus, partnering with the private sector. The goal, as has been written many times, is create a foundation for economic growth.

But even after broadband is installed, economic growth doesn’t just happen automatically. It has to be nurtured. That’s the challenge that cities, regions, and countries have to be aware of. The work doesn’t stop once broadband transmissions start.
